Basic principles in materials, mechanics, wave motion, thermodynamics, optics, electricity and magnetism are involved in musical instrument design and musical production, recording and reproduction. This website is being developed as an educational tool for anyone interested in learning more about the math, science and engineering behind music and musical instruments. The material presented here compliments material taught in undergraduate and graduate level courses in vibrations and acoustics within the UIC Mechanical Engineering Program.

The initial development of this interactive website was supported by the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career (CAREER) Development Award and the UIC Great Cities Program. Initial website developers were Lars Cederbro and Karin Wessen from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. Students working in the UIC Acoustics & Vibrations Laboratory continue to add to this site, which is always under construction.
